Overall Score: 7.0 / 10 (Strong)

How Dive Otter scores scuba gear

A modular travel fin designed to break down into compact components for easier packing. I have used it for wetsuit diving on boats, in quarries, and in pools, including four dives in Hawaii during a dedicated travel trip. The fin performs competently underwater, but its real value is portability rather than raw propulsion. I use it situationally when travel weight and space matter more than maximum power. One important tradeoff is the proprietary takedown tool. If it is lost, the fins cannot be disassembled or reassembled, which directly undermines their travel advantage.

Pros & Cons

ProsCons
Extremely travel-friendly due to modular breakdownLess thrust and authority than traditional full-size fins
Lightweight without feeling flimsySofter feel under load compared to fins like the Mares Avanti Quattro+
Comfortable foot pocket for extended divesModular design adds complexity without performance gain
Easy to pack alongside boots in carry-on or tight luggagePremium price largely justified by travel convenience
Reliable ScubaPro build qualityRequires a proprietary takedown tool that cannot be easily replaced if lost

Why I Chose the ScubaPro Supernova

I bought the Supernova specifically as a travel fin. The appeal was simple: a fin that breaks down into separate blade and boot components to save space and weight. For warm-water wetsuit diving on trips where luggage constraints matter, that modular design solves a real problem.

I used the Supernova on a Hawaii trip and in local pool and quarry sessions to get a better sense of its overall behavior. While it does not outperform my primary fins, it travels far more easily and does not feel compromised for the type of diving it is intended for.

Verdict

The ScubaPro Supernova succeeds as a travel fin, but only if you are willing to accept additional complexity and a hard dependency on a proprietary takedown tool. It is trying to be the most convenient fin to travel with. On that front, it succeeds. Underwater performance is solid but unremarkable, and that is an acceptable tradeoff given the design goals.

Would I buy it again? Yes, as a dedicated travel fin. It fills that role well and stays in my kit for trips.
