How Dive Otter scores scuba gear
The Bare Ultrawarmth 3mm gloves are warm-to-temperate water scuba diving gloves designed for divers who want high dexterity without bulky insulation. I have used these gloves in pools, quarries, and open water dives into the high 50s°F, where they consistently delivered better warmth and control than I expected from a 3mm glove. Fit and dexterity are the standout strengths, making routine tasks like clips and buckles easy. After using these gloves extensively, they set the baseline that led me to buy the 5mm version for colder dives.
Pros & Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent dexterity compared to bulkier 3mm and 5mm gloves | Not sufficient for true cold-water diving without stepping up to thicker gloves |
| Warm enough for open water dives into the high 50s°F | Costs more than entry-level 3mm gloves |
| Snug fit with no excess material at the fingertips | Fit is critical; if sizing is off, performance drops quickly |
| Low bulk makes these easy to pack and easy to reach for | |
| Holds up well to repeated pool and quarry use |
Why I Chose Bare Ultrawarmth Glove (3mm)
I bought these gloves because I wanted better dexterity and fit than the bulky 5mm Aqualung gloves I already owned. My goal was a glove I could use often without feeling like I was wearing oven mitts underwater. The 3mm Ultrawarmth fit my hand shape correctly and performed well in both pool sessions and open water. After using them regularly, I was confident enough in the design and fit to buy the 5mm version specifically for colder dives.
Verdict
This glove permanently changed my expectations of what a 3mm glove can do. It has a dedicated role in my kit as my default glove for warm and temperate diving where dexterity matters more than maximum insulation.
Would I buy it again? Yes. I already validated that decision by purchasing the 5mm version after extensive use of the 3mm model.
