Suunto SK8 Compass Review

One of the most reliable analog compasses available. It is fast-settling, highly accurate, and easy to read even in low visibility. I’ve used it on every dive for the past two years with a bungee mount and have never had a performance issue. If you want a compass that simply works, without bubbles, drift, or delay, this is it.
Overall Score: 9.2 / 10
Pros & Cons
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Fast-settling and stable underwater | More expensive than some entry models |
Large, easy-to-read bezel and markings | Bungee replacement parts not always easy to find |
Reliable in all conditions without sticking or bubbles | None specific to performance |
Why I Chose the Suunto SK8 Compass
I originally purchased the retractable version of the SK8 to practice and build comfort with navigation. Once I had the hang of it, I transitioned to a wrist bungee mount for easier access and quicker donning and doffing. I had previously tried a cheaper compass, but it turned out to be inaccurate, overly sensitive, and just frustrating to use. The SK8 gave me clean, readable headings and confidence that it would settle quickly and stay put even with minor movement. That made a big difference when running square patterns or leading dives. The visibility is excellent, and it has worked in both tropical dives and cold water with gloves.
Performance in the Water
- Trim & Buoyancy: No trim impact. It sits comfortably on the wrist and is neutral underwater.
- Kick Styles / Usage: Works in all kick styles. Can be referenced during frog, flutter, or navigation swims.
- Comfort: Lightweight and easy to forget it's there. Bungee mount is secure and quick to use with gloves.
- Control / Function: Bezel turns easily. Degree markers are clear, and there's no lag or drift.
Verdict
I still use the Suunto SK8 on every dive. It has never let me down and delivers exactly what I need from an analog compass: fast readings, stable performance, and no hassle. The bungee mount is especially helpful for quick donning with dry gloves or in surf zones. If I were buying again, I would choose the same model and configuration.
Would I buy it again? Yes. I’ve already recommended it to several other divers as a trusted choice.
