How do you clear a flooded mask underwater?
To clear a flooded mask, press the top of the frame gently against your forehead, look upward, and exhale through your nose. The air coming from your nose forces the water down and out through the bottom of the mask skirt. It only takes a second or two once you learn the motion. The goal is to let that exhaled air push the water out without lifting or removing the mask.
Even experienced divers have to focus on this skill. After more than 150 dives, I still catch myself unconsciously splitting my exhale between my mouth and nose, which makes the mask clear less effectively. You have to deliberately direct all your exhale through your nose to get it right. A mask can leak for many reasons, including hair under the skirt or a less-than-perfect fit, so being able to clear it calmly is essential. Water in the mask is normal, not an emergency. With a little attention and practice, you can clear it in one smooth breath and keep diving comfortably.
