How do I choose the right scuba mask?

The right scuba mask is the one that seals comfortably on your face without needing to overtighten the strap. Every diver’s face is different, so fit matters far more than brand or color. To test fit, hold the mask gently against your face without using the strap, inhale slightly through your nose, and see if it stays in place. If it seals evenly and feels comfortable on the bridge of your nose, it is likely a good fit.

There is one trick that most new divers do not know. The shape of your face changes when you put a regulator in your mouth. The regulator pulls slightly at the corners of your mouth and can break a seal that seemed perfect in the shop. When testing a mask, try it with a regulator or a spare mouthpiece in your mouth to see how it fits under real conditions. A good mask should still seal easily even with your mouth engaged.

Low-volume masks sit closer to your face and are easier to clear, while larger masks can provide a wider field of view. Always try several styles before buying. What feels fine on land can feel tight or uneven underwater, especially after a long dive.
