How deep can you dive without certification?

Without certification, you can only dive under the direct supervision of a professional instructor during an introductory experience such as a Discover Scuba or Try Dive program. These dives usually go no deeper than 30 feet (9 meters). The limit is not about physical ability. It exists because if an uncertified diver panics and bolts to the surface, the chance of injury from a rapid ascent is much lower from a shallow depth.

Certified recreational divers are trained to manage buoyancy, breathing control, and emergency ascents. Once certified, most divers are cleared for depths up to 60 feet (18 meters) in open water, with further training required to go deeper. The difference is not in natural capability but in preparation. Certification gives you the knowledge and muscle memory to handle the dive safely.
